How to Determine YOUR Skin type!
Heyy yall, I know you came to my blog to get not only luxury and travel vibes, but more importantly...SKIN CARE help. I want to start you off correctly in your skin care journey with the basics...determining your skin type. In order to have a functioning routine and actually buy products that work for YOU, you NEED to know what your skin type is.
Now if you're asking yourself what tf is a skin type, and how you can determine what your skin type is, I will tell you all you need to know.
There are four basic skin types : normal, dry, oily and combination skin. Skin type is determined by genetics. The condition of our skin can change depending on various internal and external factors. (p.s. sensitive skin is NOT a skin type, it is a skin condition)
Sensitive skin as a skin type is a long standing debate in the beauty/skincare community. IN MY PROFESSIONAL OPINION, sensitive skin is NOT a skin type, its a skin condition. The two main skin conditions are sensitive and dehydrated. A skin condition or skin disorder is a reaction the skin has to allergens, irritants, certain diseases, medicines or products.
Here are two easy ways to determine what your skin type is.
1) THE BARE-FACED METHOD
Cleanse your face thoroughly with a basic, gentle cleanser and gently pat dry. DO NOT apply anything to your face and wait ( I know it will be hard, but trust me, DO IT) . After 30 minutes, examine your face for any oil or shine. After another 30 minutes, check and see whether your skin feels dry or tight, especially if you smile or make any other facial expressions. If your skin feels tight, your skin is likely dry. If there is noticeable shine on your nose and forehead, your skin is mostly likely normal/combination. If there is shine on your cheeks in addition to your forehead and nose, you most likely have oily skin.
2) THE TISSUE METHOD
This method is much faster, easier and often an excellent way to tell the difference between oily and dry skin. Gently pat a blotting paper or tissue on the different areas of your face. Hold the sheet up to the light to determine how much oil is visible. If the sheet picked up little to no oil, you most likely have dry skin. If the blotting sheet reveals oil from the forehead and nose areas, your skin is normal/combination. Finally, if the blotting paper is saturated with oil, it is extremely likely that you have oily skin.
Once you are able to determine your skin type, you will be able to start buying the proper products and be on your way to healthy skin.
You and your skin are unique, no one has the exact same skin as you...you still should fall into one of four major skin type categories. I created a skin type quiz
